Scissors, Calculator,

and a Beige Coat

2018 | Graduate project from BFash (Design) (Hons)

Scissors, Calculator, and a Beige Coat is the graduate project of Helena Dong.

As a capsule collection, an online text-based game, and a performance piece, this project carries themes of resourcefulness and independence based on a series of events and self-reflections from Helena’s childhood, following her migration to Australia.

The aim of Scissors, Calculator, and a Beige Coat is to amplify the interactions between the viewer, the designer, the performer, and the garment within a fashion presentation context.

This project also seeks to heighten audience participation through a text-based game by producing outcomes that are affected by the player’s contribution.

Influenced by writings on relational aesthetics, spectatorship and contemporary performance practices, the game aspect of this project presents narrative scenarios that are minimal and empathetic in nature.

Following the structure of a ‘choose your own adventure’ story, the game progress is propelled by  the player’s decisions, these decisions are in turn reflected by the garments through a series of structural transformations, allowing the original outfit to shift into 62 different configurations, each in accordance with the different plot-lines and conclusions.
